23andMe genetic map of Europe

This is a PCA plot showing the genetic relationship between various groups from across Europe, superimposed on a geographic map of the continent. It was posted recently at the 23andMe Research Findings blog. The results obviously show a high correlation with modern ethnic and political borders, which makes sense. I wonder if 23andMe is planning to update its ancestry tools by including something like this? That would be rather nice.

  1. Yes it would be nice, and a vast improvement on what exists at present at 23andMe. I guess the MT is me. The newer PCA of Europe in their blog has more folks in it than the PCA above. Maybe you should update the PCA. How do you view the Colonials and the various North Africans and Middle Easterners placed in Europe?

  2. It looks like they based that map on a West Eurasian PCA, rather than a European one. Many of the Middle Eastern samples are in Europe because of the effects of the Linear Regression used to push the Europeans into their respective countries. They probably should have just dropped them to avoid confusion.
